야스마사 모리무라(森村泰昌) Yasumasa Morimura 

1985년 빈센트 반 고흐의 자화상으로 분장한 사진 작품을 발표한 이후로 현재에 이르기까지 자신을 사진의 소재로 하는 모리무라 야스마사(森村泰昌, Yasumasa Morimura). 그의 작업이 가지는 공통분모는 아이콘적인 이미지를 사용한다는 것이다. 그는 한 장의 사진 속에 인종, 민족, 젠더의 문제를 다루며 작가 자신이 역사 속의 부산물인 이미지의 아이콘에 직접 들어감으로써 이미 잘 알려져 인식되어진 이미지에 대해 관객들로 하여금 혼돈을 불러일으킨다. 또한 그 이미지 속에 그가 생각하는 상징적인 요소를 소도구로 배치하여 보는 이로 하여금 웃음을 자아낸다.
그의 작품은 오리지널의 카피로서 시작하여 재생산된 그의 이미지가 다시 재해석되어 오리지널로서 소화되어 가는 과정을 직접 보여주고 있다. 오리지널과 카피가 혼재하며 소비되어 가는 현대를 표현하는 작가라고 할 수 있다.
1988년의 베니스비엔날레의 ‘아페르토’ 부문과 1989년에는 전미를 순회한 일본 미술전 <어게인스트 네이처 1980년대의 일본 미술>에 참가하여 각광을 받은 모리무라 야스마사는 2007년 베니스의 갈레리아 디파아짜 산 마르코에서 첫 선을 보인 신작 <20세기에의 레퀘엠>으로 다시 주목을 모아 2010년에서 2011년에 걸쳐 세계 각지와 일본 전국의 미술관에서 순회전이 예정되어 있다.

When Yasumasa Morimura presents his photo which he made himself up to look like Vincent Van Gogh in 1985, he used himself as a material of his photo works so far. His works have something in common in the way that he uses representative images. He deals with the problems of race, people and gender with pictures. As he comes into the historical images. he makes audiences to confused about the well known images. In addition, he makes us a laugh by setting up the symbolical elements as props in those images.
Starting from the copy of originals, he shows us directly the process which his images reproduce and reinterpret the originals. Yasumasa Morimura is the photographer who expresses modern society which is mixed with originals and copies.
Yasumasa Morimura was in the spotlight attending Venice Biennale "43th La Biennale di Venezia, Aperto'88" field in 1988 and <Against Nature; Japanese Art in the Eighties> in 1989. He was getting the spotlight again showing his new works in 2007 <Yasumasa Morimura - Requiem for the XX Century, Twilight of the turbulent Gods> at Galleria di Piazza San Marco, Venice. His new works are scheduled to have exhibitions all over the world and Japan from 2010 to 2011
